Last month I was studying a seller’s photographs for a long time before I understood what I was looking at.โฃ
โฃ
Stains bled across the interiors of the presentation boxes. Labels were scratched and scarred at the margins. The paint on the glass flacons looked clouded with oily residue. Most conspicuous of all, one of the four zirconia crystals embedded in each heavy metal cap was a different colour from the other three.โฃ
โฃ
Guys, I keep every box. I store flacons in a box on the ground where they cannot fall and daylight and fluctuating temperatures cannot touch them. A microscopic scuff on a lacquer cap is enough to irritate me for a week, and the thought of breakage brings me to the verge of hyperventilation. The weight of the glass and the state of the packaging are not secondary perks of this hobby. They are part of what I think I am paying for.โฃ
โฃ
Most collectors would glance at those photographs, identify the warning signs, and scroll past.โฃ
โฃ
I bought two. This is the strange story of how they reached me and what I think of them; two standouts from an obscure Turkish house that may be on the cusp of fame and fortune.
The seller was Abdullah Gangat, an active member of the Canadian Fragrance Enthusiasts community on Facebook. He was offloading a cache of Merchant of Venice and Attar Al Has flacons at prices slashed so far below retail they practically demanded skepticism. The discount was directly tied to the condition of the stock.โฃ
โฃ
Attar Al Has was an unfamiliar name. The house was founded in Istanbul in 2021 by Ersin Bas and Sinan Karakas, two industry veterans attempting to bridge European technical perfumery with Ottoman heritage.โฃ
โฃ
Digging through collector reviews online I found a handful of fragrances mentioned repeatedly, and from them Skin Musk and Leather Effecto stood out. Skin Musk struck me as a possible relative of Amouage Guidance, though nobody was saying so. Leather Effecto was described everywhere as a twist on Initio’s Side Effect.โฃ
โฃ
The scents were intriguing. The condition of the bottles on the other hand was a real downer.โฃ
โฃ
Abdullah was transparent about whatever he knew. He could not explain the cosmetic damage and said so before I ever committed to buying from him. He also volunteered the cap inconsistencies himself rather than waiting for me to find them.โฃ
โฃ
I verified his standing. Veteran members of the Canadian Fragrance Enthusiasts group on Facebook, the largest Canadian group of its kind, vouched for Abdullah’s integrity without reservation. Throughout our correspondence he never pressured a sale, always swiftly sent any photograph I asked for, and answered hyper-specific questions without complaint.โฃ
โฃ
When I pulled up at Abdullahโs home on a quiet residential street in Mississauga, Ontario, his brother Adnan answered the door and welcomed me inside. Abdullah was managing the transaction remotely from Pakistan. Adnan stepped into an adjacent room and returned with several battered, heavyweight bottles.โฃ
โฃ
Holding Skin Musk and Leather Effecto in the foyer light, the cosmetic reality was even starker than the photos. I had heard the presentation might be awful but the juice was fine, so taking a deep breath I transferred 300 CAD to Abdullah. Retail is 285 euros for 100 ml of Leather Effecto and 295 euros for Skin Musk, roughly 455 and 475 CAD at the time of writing. I walked out clutching my bottles, unsure whether I had just made the steal of the century or would come to rue the day I bought them.โฃ
โฃ
It was time to find out what was actually inside the glass.โฃ

Everyone and their second cousin knows that damaged bottles are a textbook profile of an imitation. After rigorous testing on skin, I became convinced both bottles were genuine.โฃ
โฃ
Counterfeits usually betray themselves in the drydown. They rely on volatile top notes to mimic the initial burst of an authentic profile and lure an unsuspecting buyer, then collapse 40 minutes later into a flat, synthetic swamp as the cheap carrier solvents evaporate. I have watched it happen more than once, even purposely buying a counterfeit bottle of Nishane Hacivat to see how it performed (answer: not good).โฃ
โฃ
These bottles did the opposite. On skin, both compositions opened with clean, apparently high-grade aromachemicals and natural extracts, unfurling across distinct chronological phases. The mid-phase accords emerged precisely where they should, and the drydowns possessed the lingering, multifaceted tenacity of a properly built high-concentration composition. Across every sensory and structural test available to an experienced nose without a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry machine, these juices performed impeccably, and for more than eight hours.โฃ
โฃ
Then I did the thing that should always follow a conviction. I wrote to Attar Al Has and asked them how on earth their damaged stock ended up in Ontario.โฃ
๐๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ข๐โฃ
Ersin Bas replied within a day, on the record, and answered every question I put to him. I deeply appreciated that, rather than being redirected to someone else or, worse, ghosted. As one of the two men who founded the house his answers carried real weight. They were also the kind that raises new questions for every one they settle.โฃ
โฃ
Attar Al Has has no authorized distributor or retailer in Canada. North American sales are handled directly from Istanbul, and every bottle the house ships leaves the facility “inspected, sealed and in pristine condition.” Stock in the state I described, Bas wrote, “did not reach Canada through any channel we control.” He could not say how the two bottles came to be in a private seller’s hands, and asked for photographs and batch numbers so they could be traced. Until an authorized partner exists, he asked that Canadian buyers order through the house’s own site, so that Attar Al Has “can guarantee the authenticity and condition of what they receive.”โฃ
โฃ
I asked Bas why Leather Effecto was listed without a perfumer when Skin Musk was credited, and whether the composer was Hรผseyin Erdoฤmuล as other sources stated. Bas confirmed Erdoฤmuล and thanked me for pointing out that the credit was missing from the product page, adding simply, “we will correct this.”โฃ
๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฌโฃ
Here is what an Attar Al Has cap actually looks like, something I was not aware of when I bought the fragrances from Abdullah. Four zirconia crystals, one at each corner. Three are silver. The fourth is keyed to the colour of the bottle beneath it: amber on the gold Skin Musk flacon, near-black on the gunmetal Leather Effecto. It is the house’s design, and it is deliberate.โฃ
โฃ
It is also, as far as I can establish, close to unique in modern perfumery. Luxury hardware is built on symmetry. A set of four stones on a cap is a set of four matching stones, in every comparable bottle I own. Even Armaf doesnโt mess with this formula. An odd stone out of four, on a house almost nobody in this market has handled, on flacons whose labels had disintegrated and whose boxes were ringed with water damage, read as just one more piece of wreckage.โฃ
โฃ
I was not alone in reading it that way. Abdullah, who had the bottles in his possession for weeks and photographed them extensively, also flagged the caps to me as an inconsistency before I ever agreed to buy. However, the stains, the peeled labels and the clouded glass are real defects, and to this day are still unexplained.โฃ
๐๐๐ง๐๐ฆ๐โฃ
Which leaves the actual question of how two damaged bottles of a Turkish house with no Canadian distribution ended up in a foyer in Mississauga.โฃ
โฃ
After mentioning to Abdullah that I was working on this story he told me, to my great surprise, that he acquired the bottles from stores in Panama. He revealed that friends of his have perfume shops in the Central American country, and “they basically gave me these as clearance.” He said the shops had no idea what condition the stock was in. I somehow doubted this, but Abdullah had given me no reason so far that I shouldnโt trust him. The contact who supplied them “was truly apologetic and offered to compensate me further”, he added.โฃ
โฃ
He also told me he bought out their entire Skin Musk stock, but that they “do have a lot more from the brand still available.” Whatever happened to the bottles I have, they may not be the last of them.โฃ
โฃ
When I revealed to Abdullah that Attar Al Hasโ co-founder Bas wanted the bottles traced, Abdullah offered to go back through his contacts for the batch codes. He also sent me roughly 30 photographs of the damaged goods as he first received it. “It would actually be nice to get to the bottom of this,” he wrote.โฃ
โฃ
More than a month later, I personally do not believe Abdullah did anything wrong. A seller with something to hide does not volunteer the paper trail that would expose them.โฃ
โฃ
Water damage is the plainest reading of what those photographs show, and a clearance channel through Central America is an entirely mundane explanation for stock arriving in Canada looking like this. However, much of the damage, including the scratches and scuff mark indicate something more than just submersion. It is also outside anything Ersin Bas addressed, since his answer concerned Canada and direct sales from Istanbul.โฃ
โฃ
Financially, the purchase was straightforward. Abdullah asked a paltry 150 CAD apiece against retail of 295 and 285 euros, which if the juice held up would be an extraordinary bargain at roughly a third of the retail price. The resale value for bottles in this condition is essentially zero, which is precisely why the price was what it was. โฃ
โฃ๐๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ๐ฌโฃ
While photographing my bottles for Bas, I turned them over. Both bases are stickered identically: ATTAR AL HAS & CO., EAU DE PARFUM, 34235-ISTANBUL, 100 ml, MADE IN TรRKIYE. I was surprised to see the fragrances labelled as eau de parfum when the house’s own site lists Skin Musk as an extrait de parfum. Bas also described Leather Effecto to me as a 100 ml extrait.โฃ
โฃ
There are ordinary explanations. These may be older bottles from before a change in concentration, or the engraving on the glass may lag the designation used in marketing. I put the question to the house and asked which I should print, but I did not receive an answer before my deadline. I have gone with what is on the stickers on the bottles in my hand, and flagged the discrepancy rather than quietly choosing the flattering answer.โฃ
โฃ
The batch trace may have stalled for a duller reason. The only code on either base is 9FP1, identical on both bottles despite them being different fragrances from different collections, which suggests a mould or format code rather than the batch number the house asked for. I have asked where else to look, and Abdullah has offered to go back through his own contacts for whatever they hold.โฃ
โฃ
My follow-up questions about the cap design, the concentration, the batch marking and the Panama route were unanswered at the time of publication. Attar Al Has answered my first email within a day and in full, and I have no reason to read the silence as anything more than a small house having an unusual week.โฃ

Karine Vinchon Spehner’s name was the catalyst that demanded I take Skin Musk seriously. A senior perfumer at Robertet with a long list of credits across niche and mainstream houses, her public credit on the Attar Al Has product page signalled the house’s serious compositional intent.โฃ
โฃ
The comparison absent from current community discussion is that Skin Musk shares an unmistakable architectural blueprint with Amouage’s Guidance. The structural parallels are striking. Both open on a deliberate contrast between orchard fruit and vanillic nuttiness: Guidance balances luscious pear against hazelnut, Skin Musk puts a fleshy peach against bitter almond. Both deploy a rich, dewy rose in the heart to bridge the opening to a base anchored in smooth vanilla.โฃ
โฃ
Here is the part nobody in this conversation seems to have registered. Guidance was composed by Quentin Bisch and released in 2023. Skin Musk was composed by Spehner and released in 2022. โฃ
โฃ
The obscure Turkish house got there first.โฃ
โฃ
I want to be careful with that fact. Perfumery runs on shared briefs, shared captive materials and shared trends, and two houses arriving at adjacent structures within a year of each other is entirely ordinary. I am not suggesting anybody took anything from anyone. What I am saying is that the assumption runs the wrong way. It would be easy for someone to assume Skin Musk as the shadow and Guidance as the object casting it, yet the dates do not support that. Once you know them you cannot un-know them.โฃ
โฃ
Furthermore, Skin Musk and Guidance are not interchangeable. Skin Musk is the better projector of the pair in my opinion. To my nose it carries further into a room than Guidance does and holds there longer, and it is the warmer of the two by some distance. It is playful, generous, a joy to wear, and it does not belong in an office.โฃ
โฃ
I have never seen the appeal of Guidance. It is an impeccably crafted gourmand with a devoted following, but to my nose something is missing from it. It also flies in the face of Amouageโs tradition to not do gourmands. Attar Al Has clearly has no such compunctions, Skin Musk is just one of many gourmands released by the house. As a fragrance it offers a cleaner contrast that gives the composition a volume and verve I donโt get from Guidance. It feels like the opulent skeleton of Guidance with the sultry undertones of Arabian Oud’s Sultani.โฃ
โฃ
None of the above makes Skin Musk flawless or a better fragrance than Guidance. It is very much a perfume to me, meaning it smells synthetic, like something imaginary but definitely artificial, not natural. Also the quality of the materials seems at least a couple steps below what I expect from a high end niche brand. It certainly does not smell to me like it should cost 295 euros. The materials are merely very good rather than extraordinary, and at full retail I would find that price difficult to defend.โฃ
โฃ
Performance on the other hand is formidable without being obnoxious. It delivers eight hours of longevity on my skin, roughly the first three of them strongly projecting, and it clings to textiles far longer. By evening I could no longer detect it at all, but when an acquaintance met me later he immediately said I smelled good. Either I had gone anosmic to my own scent or he had an unusually sharp nose, or maybe both.โฃ
โฃ
Skin Musk does lean into traditionally feminine territory in its opening, before drying down into an earthy, skin-warmed luxury that any confident wearer can carry.โฃ

At the time of writing, Leather Effecto carries no perfumer credit anywhere on the brand’s platform, an omission the house acknowledged to me. Erdoฤmuล was confirmed by Attar Al Has co-founder Ersin Bas directly. I do not have experience with the perfumer, but if Leather Effecto is any indication then I must smell more of his work. โฃ
โฃ
If Skin Musk is a case of mistaken direction, Leather Effecto is reputed to be a genuine twist. It is a fragrance built openly on someone else’s foundation. The reference point is Initio’s Side Effect, introduced in 2016 as one of the pillar releases that established that brand’s cult status.โฃ
โฃ
Recent batches of Side Effect suffer from widely reported performance complaints from owners, a pattern Initio has not publicly addressed. I am by no means an expert on that fragrance; my sole encounter with Side Effect was a single test at a Cairo duty free counter earlier this summer. I did notice it left me hunting for the scent on my wrist within 2 to 3 hours, the whole structure reducing to an ephemeral skin wash.โฃ
โฃ
Leather Effecto borrows the core triumvirate of Side Effect, rum, saffron and creamy sandalwood, then resolves its predecessor’s structural shortcomings through two distinct interventions.โฃ
โฃ
The first is the leather accord. It is present from the first spray although omitted entirely from the published notes on sites such as Fragrantica and Parfumo. This is not an abrasive birch-tar leather, nor the pungent castoreum of the animalics. I noticed a glove-soft suede, closer to a bespoke calfskin jacket lined with satin. It harnesses the syrupy sweetness of the rum note and lends the composition an architectural spine of luxurious restraint.โฃ
โฃ
The second is the drydown. Where modern Side Effect evaporates, Leather Effecto deepens and keeps getting better. Around the sixth hour the notes are still in full song off of my skin, but is never suffocating. It projects with an authoritative, low-frequency hum rather than a sharp screech.โฃ
โฃ
Borrowing an existing design is standard practice across the perfume trade, even at the luxury end of the market. Identifying a diluted masterpiece, introducing a stabilizing structural element and engineering superior longevity may be a narrow kind of artistry, but it is artistry nonetheless. I noticed Leather Effecto eclipses the mono-dimensional leather note of stalwarts such as Tom Ford’s Ombrรฉ Leather by offering far richer harmonic complexity throughout. Where I get bored of Ombrรฉ Leather, Leather Effecto has remained a novelty for me.โฃ
โฃ
Leather Effecto’s sole artistic vulnerability is that its skeleton was built on another house’s foundation. The name does it no favours either, but I cannot get enough of it. I cannot wait to wear it at dinner parties during colder months.
Attar Al Has remains an obscure curio in North America, largely due to non-existent domestic distribution. If the house establishes a reliable supply chain on this side of the Atlantic, that obscurity will vanish quickly. It is that good.โฃ
โฃ
Yet the insight that lingers has little to do with market analysis. It has to do with the damaged boxes sitting on my shelf, and with four crystals I could not read.โฃ
โฃ
Fragrance collectors spend substantial fortunes curating an aesthetic ritual. We fetishize the weight of custom zamak caps, the crisp snap of magnetic closures, the pristine gloss of embossed packaging. We convince ourselves that this preservationism is reverence for the craft. It was worth asking myself what the fixation is actually for, when my eyee trained to catch a scuff at 40 paces could look at four stones on a cap and see damage instead of intent.โฃ
โฃ
These two battered flacons dismantled that illusion. They hold some of the most compelling olfactory work I have encountered this year, purchased for a fraction of retail because the world judged them by their cosmetic distress.โฃ
โฃ
When the juice is this good, the theatre of the packaging is the first thing that is forgotten.โฃ
