An Author’s Scent: Amouage Portrayal Man Explained by a Writer

Nostalgia is a powerful drug. The remembrance of better days, the feeling that a period in life was special in a way that has since been lost. Sometimes a fragrance can conjure all of that, especially one that speaks directly to the heart.⁣

One of the best to do that is Amouage Portrayal Man, one of my favourites from the house. Not least because it was inspired, in part, by writers and artists of a long-gone era, and it somehow reminds me of my formative days as an author.⁣

I realize that nailing my colours to the mast and implying Portrayal is among Amouage’s best will raise more than a few eyebrows.⁣

𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘯? 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦, 𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘤? 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘏𝘶𝘵, 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘱𝘪𝘤? 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳 𝘑𝘶𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 40?!⁣

Hold on. I didn’t say those are bad fragrances. In fact, all of them are fantastic and deserve high praise. All I’m saying is that Portrayal deserves far more attention than it gets. Strangely, few people seem to remember it.⁣

In all the top 10, 15, or 20 lists I’ve seen, Portrayal is rarely mentioned as a must-have. If it wasn’t for one reviewer, that might never have changed for me.⁣

I stumbled across Portrayal when I watched a video by Mark Robitaille of the Robes08 YouTube channel. He mentioned that the violet leaf note in Portrayal is arguably the best anywhere.⁣

That was enough to pique my curiosity. I began hunting for it, not to buy, but to sample. Unfortunately, nobody seemed to be decanting it at the time.⁣

Conceptualized by former Amouage Creative Director and bona fide genius Christopher Chong, the house’s official description of Portrayal Man states that it was inspired by 1920s bohemian culture.⁣

Looking into bohemian ideology, I learned it was an extroverted, anti-establishment movement of artists, writers, poets, and thinkers who rejected conformity and embraced hedonism. It stood in opposition to materialistic, conventional and middle-class values, embracing freedom of expression and radical independence.⁣

Much as I hope I can be an independent thinker, I have no interest in otherwise living like a bohemian. What caught my attention was that Portrayal seemed to hearken back to a time when writers wrote bravely, from the heart and with complete honesty—not out of fear of being different or greed for the almighty dollar.⁣

Fortunately, a fellow Amouage aficionado suggested I visit Niche Essence in Toronto.⁣

“They have everything,” he said as I picked up a decant of Amouage Journey Man, adding that unfortunately he didn’t own Portrayal. “It’s one of the best places in the city for niche fragrances.”⁣

I looked up the address and immediately drove over.⁣

I was very impressed by the selection and the staff were very knowledgeable, though it was also among the most expensive fragrance stores I’ve seen in Canada. A 100 ml bottle of Portrayal was priced at $540 CAD. I realized I wasn’t there to buy, only to sample. I spotted the Portrayal tester immediately and walked over.⁣

I don’t like to dwell too much on packaging, since the juice is what matters, but the bottle is stunning. It comes in the rectangular Chong-era design, shimmering like gasoline on water. On top sits the familiar metal cap shaped like a traditional Omani khanjar dagger. This one had the older friction fit rather than the newer magnetic style.⁣

If you’ve seen Amouage Reflection Man, you have a good idea of what Portrayal looks like. Regal, opulent, and slightly iconoclastic. I can only imagine the reaction from Amouage heads when it was first released in 2019.⁣

But packaging means nothing if the fragrance doesn’t deliver.⁣

I must confess, I didn’t get anything overtly “bohemian” from Portrayal. What it instantly reminded me of was the 1980s.⁣

Portrayal Man opened with a beautiful blend of violet leaf and violet flower, interwoven with cade oil. To Mark’s credit the violet leaf was delightful. The violet leaf is quite hard to describe, but it was somewhat close to what a fresh, wet salad would smell like … it was somewhat aromatic with a pinch of aquatic notes mingling with violet flowers, an utterly familiar yet bracing combination. Meanwhile cade oil introduced an unmistakable gasoline nuance and vetiver provided structure and depth, allowing the fragrance to last eight to nine hours.⁣

Those are the only official notes: violet, vetiver and cade oil. I was certain more was happening beneath the surface. I caught hints of cumin and incense, but the composition remained focused and remarkably direct. There was very little evolution; the core character was apparent from the beginning.⁣

But simple does not mean basic. This is a fully realized, complete fragrance. While it isn’t beast mode or room-filling like many Amouage releases, it is quietly compelling.⁣

At this point, I understood why some people compare Portrayal to Dior Fahrenheit (1988). In Fahrenheit, the gasoline accord is far stronger and supported by a complex structure of cedar, chamomile, mandarin, hawthorn, nutmeg and much more. In Portrayal, the gasoline is softer, smoother, and more restrained, almost as though it was built then deconstructed.⁣

That is where the similarity ends between the two frags, otherwise, they are worlds apart.⁣

As I left the store, I couldn’t stop sniffing my hand. This was clearly inspired by another era but modernized for today. It felt unusual, serious and contemplative. By the time I got home, my mind was made up. Here was a fragrance that was not a crowd-pleaser, but composed, intellectual and admittedly austere, communicating seriousness, control and depth of character in a way I had never experienced. ⁣

The general consensus I found from reviewers I looked up late that night was that Portrayal is a very good fragrance, but not among the very best of the house. Some even suggested it might be discontinued. This only added a sense of urgency to my search.⁣
There was nothing like it in my collection. I wouldn’t pay retail, but if I could find it for less, I would absolutely buy it.⁣

Finding Portrayal Man is a story in itself.⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐭⁣

I searched for months in Facebook groups and Marketplace with no success. A few 100 ml bottles briefly appeared at Maximum Fragrance, my favourite fragrance store in the Toronto area, but almost immediately sold out before I could get it. But I was not going to give up that easily. The scent profile had burned itself into my memory, pushing me to keep looking. When nothing turned up in Canada, I looked to the US.⁣

Near the end of a trip to the Chicago area, I visited House of Dubai, arguably the best niche fragrance retailer in the Midwest. They offer 10 ml decants, and I hoped Portrayal would be among them. I was in luck. They had it, along with nearly every masculine Amouage release.⁣

House of Dubai has the best customer service of any fragrance store I’ve visited. “Come behind the counter and try anything you like. This is your store,” a staff member said, introducing himself as Aahad. Another young man approached with a bottle in each hand and a smile on his face, recommendations flowing forth with obvious expertise. But at that moment I had eyes only for Portrayal.⁣

“I want that one. I’ve been looking everywhere for it.” They decanted it on the spot and charged me $39 USD for 10 ml. I was so happy I had to hug Aahad. At least now I could try the fragrance properly in different situations over many days and see if my initial interest was still holding strong.⁣

Over the following week, I wore Portrayal often. Not daily, but on the right occasions it was perfect: rainy, cool days; meeting elders; Friday prayers; and most of all, while writing. Not only did I really like Portrayal but it somehow perfectly slotted into my lifestyle, as if it was tailored for me.⁣

My bottle came like a thunderbolt out of the sky. On my return from Chicago to Toronto, glowing after securing a major ghostwriting contract, I noticed that The Fragrance Shop in Newmarket had a bottle. I called, and Jason confirmed it was $299 CAD plus tax, and that it was the only one left. This time I didn’t tarry; I ordered it immediately for pickup.⁣

At last, it was mine.⁣

Bringing home my long-sought bottle of Portrayal Man was one of the most satisfying moments I’ve had as a collector. In the weeks since, it has earned a special place in my rotation.⁣

I have smelled and owned many fragrances, yet Portrayal stands apart. My attachment to it might not seem reasonable to the vast majority of people, even hardcore Amouage collectors, but it easily sits in my top three from the house.⁣

There is a reason why I think Portrayal should be recognized for its unique place in the Amouage canon. I may not share much with bohemians beyond being a wordsmith who thinks for himself, but as a writer, Portrayal speaks to me in a way few fragrances ever have. Definitely I recommend creatives of every type to give it a chance, if they are lucky enough to find it. It is full-bottle worthy in every sense.⁣

Amouage, if you’re listening, please do more fragrances like this. What a simple yet complex creation of stunning elegance and sophistication, I pray it never be discontinued.⁣
